GED Program

The GED (General Education Development) test is a widely recognized pathway to earning a state-issued and nationally accepted high school equivalency credential from the State of California. This program is designed for adults who wish to demonstrate their mastery of high school-level knowledge and skills, opening doors to higher education, diverse career opportunities, and acceptance by all branches of the U.S. Military.

About the GED Test:

  • The GED exam is a national, computer-based test that assesses fundamental skills and general knowledge typically acquired through a four-year high school education.
  • It is a computer-based test, administered at Visalia Adult School.
  • It consists of four main subject areas:
    • Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)
    • Mathematical Reasoning
    • Science
    • Social Studies

How Long Does It Take to Complete?

The time it takes to complete your GED tests depends greatly on your individual starting point, prior education, and the amount of time you can dedicate to study.

  • Typical Preparation: Many students find that 3 to 6 months of consistent study in our preparation classes can adequately prepare them for all four tests if they are starting with foundational knowledge.
  • Personalized Pace: Highly motivated individuals with a strong academic background might be ready to test sooner, while others may benefit from more extended study. You can prepare for and take the tests at your own pace, one subject at a time, fitting your studies around your work and family commitments.

Please note: These estimated completion times are based on general adult education averages and are highly dependent on individual student factors and consistent study habits. Completion details were pulled from the GED website directly.

Visalia Adult School's free GED preparation classes are designed to help you prepare efficiently and effectively, guiding you through the material and offering official practice tests.

Why take the GED?

Right now in the US, not enough people have the required skills or knowledge to fill available jobs. 4 million available jobs, in fact. The GED® test can help solve this economic need by opening the doors for millions of adult learners to college courses, apprenticeships and job training—the pathway adults need to gain skills and knowledge, fill these jobs, and care for their families.

That’s why GED Testing Service made the decision to overhaul the test and build a program from the ground up, specifically for adult learners. They invested 5 years and tens of millions of dollars to provide the country with the standards-based and technology-enhanced test that the country and these adults need.
