Ana Luisa Perez Munoz
Adult Basic Education
Since enrolling in ABE, Ana has shown tremendous positivity and persistence. Studying upwards of 25 hours per week, she is making tangible gains toward her goal of earning her High School Equivalency. Ana's dedication to learning and high standards for herself serve as a model for the students in our program. Congratulations Ana!
Instructor- Lauren Haley
English as a Second Language
I learned about the ESL program through my cousin; she took classes there and recommended it to me. In my opinion, it is an excellent program because it adapts to each student and their individual needs. I started taking classes at Green Acres School with teacher Judy Moxley. She told me about the summer classes on campus, and I decided to attend. After those classes, I decided to transfer to Visalia Adult School because I would have the opportunity to take more hours of classes at different levels, which would help me progress a bit faster. Since I started taking English classes, I have been with teacher Judy Moxley. She is an excellent instructor, very patient in her teaching, and she finds ways to ensure you understand everything perfectly. The teacher makes her classes super fun and educational, which I consider very important, as it keeps us students more excited to attend. The little experience I’ve had so far has been really enjoyable. I am very enthusiastic about what I have learned and, of course, I want to continue advancing and learning more every day. It’s worth noting that when I started the program, I didn’t know anything at all, and the progress I have made so far has been significant.
My advice for those who want to join the program is to not be deterred by anything; it’s never too late to start a new career or, as in my case, a new language. They offer different schedules that fit each student. When I finish English school, I plan to join the Army to continue my studies and take on new challenges in my life. I am very grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given, and I try to make the most of it every day. I am even more thankful to the teacher for helping me and teaching me what I know so far.

Franyelit Stefany Ponte

Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
Stefany started ESL class last September at GAMS - offsite. She couldn't speak or read very much English. She attended regularly and participated in class all year. By the end of the year, she had dramatically improved in all areas. She grew in confidence enough so that she has started on campus class this year and is in the Intermediate Low class. It's very exciting that after our first benchmark period, she went up a level in tests and also went up in points! I'm very proud of her for continuing to be a dedicated and eager student. Congratulations, Stefany! Keep it up!

Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
We are so proud of Fany. She has a huge heart and strong passion for helping others. We are thankful to have been part of Fany's milestones in her academics, career and are happy to share in this moment with her as she received her citizenship.

Fany A. Alvarez
Vocational Nursing Program
I was able to achieve my goal because of a few different factors. First, I was able to learn English even though I have an accent that didn't stop me. By learning another language, it helped me because it opened a lot of doors in this beautiful country.
The Visalia Adult School help me because thanks to the teachers that VAS has,, they helped me to graduate with my high school diploma and obtain my Nurse Assistant Training license. Iwas able to meet a wonderful teacher, Mrs. Mary. today, I am in the Vocational Nursing Program at VAS and in my first semester. My teacher and Director of the VN program Ms. Glaspie believes in me. All their support has helped me alot on my journey.
I would tell others that are thinking about getting their citizenship but may be too nervous that, "Don't be scared to try to get your citizenship because everything is possible, you just need to believe you can do it."
Lastly, what inspires you to keep going each day? My inspiration is my family. Everything that I do is for them. I want my kids to be proud of me and I want to teach them to follow their dreams and that if they work hard for what they want they will be successful. All my teachers are an inspiration to me, and I wanted to thank them for all their support for helping me and for believing in me. Finally, I would like to tell the people that following your dreams sometimes is going to be hard but don't give up, Everything is possible, the impossible is possible.

CTE- Graphic Design
Justin has been my student in graphic design and has shown an aptitude for creating video content. He has created a weekly show for ATP and he's quite adept and recording, editing, and directing. Knowing that my ATP graphic design students were very creative I asked them to create a video for CCAE showcasing VAS and it's classrooms, teachers, and campus. Justin took the lead on the project and in less than 2 days he created a short film about the school that is being lauded by everyone in CCAE who has seen it. The film will be shown at the Central Section conference this Fall, and CCAE is already asking for an expanded film for the state conference in Spring. Justin is very easy to work with, he is meticulous, and he has an attention for detail that is appreciated by me and I would imagine everyone else who works with him.

Maria Barrantes

English as a Second Language
Hi my name is Maria Barrantes, At the moment I am enrolled in 2 different academic programs. I am enrolled in English as a second language and GED; I came to Visalia Adult School because of my brother. He helped me find a place to go to study English. What I like most about the program is how the teachers help us improve every day and the friends we found. I believe that the greatest impact has been my family and without a doubt my son to be able to show him that it is never too late to achieve our goals and dreams. A piece of advice I would give to everyone is not to hesitate to enroll, VAS ESL and GED is a great program to make friends and learn. It gives us a great opportunity to start fulfilling your goals. I want to continue with English classes and my next step is to study in the Nurse Assistant Training Program. Thank you, Visalia Adult school.
Student, Maria Barrantes
Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
Maria has been a student of English at VAS for a couple of years now. Last year, shortly after she had advanced to Teacher Sarah's High Intermediate/Advanced ESL class, she was blindsided with a very serious health issue. It would require her to drop out of school and prepare for a serious major surgery with a long and grueling recovery. Through those months, I stayed in touch with Maria. I was overjoyed when she said she would be well enough to enroll in classes again. Due to her extended absence, she has started in my class - Intermediate. However, she has now taken on getting her GED at the same time!!! She is doing well in both areas!! What she has overcome is a testament to her character, her tenacity, her bravery, and so much more. We are SO PROUD and SO EXCITED that she is back with us again! We have no doubt she will be back in Teacher Sarah's class soon and with a GED!!!

Carolina Olivera Perez

Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
"Carolina alerted the nurse to possible serious medical complications by utilizing her keen assessment skills. She notified the on site nurse of possible complication's using her professional medical terminology in a manner that garnered respect and immediate action from the licensed nurse that was caring for the patient. Carolina overcame the fear of approaching the nurse and responded with advocacy for the patient. "
VN Director, Joyce Glaspie
CTE- Vocational Nursing Program
I am currently enrolled in the Vocational Nursing program. I came to find this program as I started my journey in the Nurse Assistant Training Program (NATP). I always loved helping and taking care of others, I just struggled to believe in myself.
The instructors and staff here were awesome, my NATP instructor made us aware of the VN program and its requirements. It was a goal that I knew I had to work extremely hard to achieve. I completed medical terminology with a wonderful instructor here at VAS, Marixssa. She also taught the Medical Assistant program and one I've also completed. I learned so much from the instructors; They are great. The administrators have a great support system for students here. I definitely recommend attending if you are thinking of expanding your knowledge in the medical field. They also offer many other great programs.
My children, spouse and grandparents have made the greatest impact on my life. My grandparents showed me their core values and I want to make them proud. They taught me to be the best version of myself. I know they are watching over me and would be proud to see me bloom into the nurse they knew I would be one day. I value integrity, honesty, devotion, caring, and truly believe that when someone loves what they do that makes a big difference. Always doing the right thing, and like someone wise said “ always take the high road” be the bigger person.
It is never too late to start, if you have the willingness and devotion you can do anything you set your mind to. I am planning on continuing my education and becoming an RN and also achieve my BSN along the way. I would love to one day become a Nurse practitioner but only time will tell. Remember we are the only ones stopping ourselves from achieving our goals. The hardest thing is starting when it is the right timing everything will fall into place. I am a mother of four beautiful children and I won't say it is easy but definitely doable and I know it will be well worth it when my children see me accomplish my program and pass the NCLEX. So if I can do it, so can you! I believe in you!

Nghia Cao

English as a Second Language
The program I am studying at VAS is very suitable for adults whose first language is not English. Students are trained to practice skills to improve their English level. The learning content is also related to themes, such as education, banking, shopping and communication. When I want to learn English, my daughter took me to this school. That is luck for me.
What I enjoy most about the ESL program is the organization and management of classes for different levels and students from different countries. It is a great effort from the principal and teachers here.
I realize my value is just eagerness to learn. Learn what I do not know. I'm 70 years old now and still don't know much. I would say that if immigrants live in Visalia, they should attend Visalia Adult School to study and develop themselves comprehensively. Moving forward, I plan to continue to attend VAS and hope to make many more friends here.
Thank you to everyone who helped me. Thank you especially to my teacher, Judy Moxley who wholeheartedly teaches me new works every day.
Student, Nghia Cao
Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
"Nghia started ESL last year but due to some personal issues, he had to quit ESL classes shortly after. He has returned this year to Intermediate Low ESL class. Nghia is from Vietnam and has shared with others about his inability/struggle to attend school as a young person in his homeland. He attends ESL class nearly everyday with enthusiasm and his precious smile. He doesn't hesitate to tell other students that they are so very fortunate to be able to attend school to improve their English. He is one of the kindest people I know. We are so glad to have him return to Visalia Adult School ESL class."

"I am spotlighting Denise to recognize an impressive increase in her self-efficacy - the belief in her own capacity to achieve and overcome challenges. As she’s worked through our curriculum, she’s taken ownership of her learning by setting achievable goals, practicing positive self-talk, and approaching challenges with an openness that will take her really far in her academic journey. I am always so impressed when I review her progress each week. She is juggling our class and studies at COS, plus all the other responsibilities of your life... bravo Denise! I am very proud of you!"

Kim Melchor, CTE- Vocational Nursing Program
I came to find this program after becoming a medical assistant and realizing the medical field was my calling. I went on and obtained my phlebotomy license but knew I wanted to further my education. I enjoy helping others, specifically our Spanish speaking community, who tend to struggle to find the right care due to the huge language barrier that we have in our community.
What I enjoy most about this program is the amazing and supporting instructors. The instructors have office hours, remediation and material to ensure we successfully pass all of our classes and graduate. They truly want you to succeed and provide you with everything needed to mold us into great nurses!
For anyone wanting to attend VAS and further their education, it is not too late. There are many programs here, specifically if you are interested in stepping foot into the medical field.
Although I had a minor setback in furthering my education and had to take a year off, I am back and hoping to graduate in December 2025. Once I obtain my nursing license I would like to work as an LVN for a few years, while continuing my education. My long term goals are to become a RN and eventually obtain my BSN.
Student, Kim Melchor
Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
I would like to nominate Kim Melchor for the student spotlight award. Kim started with the 1224 VN cohort. She was pregnant and needed to self-drop to have her beautiful baby girl. Now she is back with the1225 cohort and ready to finish! She is so kind, hardworking and always willing to help! Kim melded right into their new cohort and is ready to finish strong. She is a great example of adult education! She is on her path and shining bright!!"

Gustavo Cazares
Adult Basic Education
"Since enrolling, Gustavo has shown an openness to the learning process and a radiant positivity. That openness allows him to take his time with lessons, keeps him committed to attending class in person, and helps him stay resilient when learning new and difficult material. He has made amazing progress and I'm very proud of him!"
Instructor, Lauren Haley
Adult Transition Program
The Adult Transition Program (ATP) helps young adults with disabilities, ages 18-22, become independent and prepares them for both employment and college. What I’ve enjoyed most about the program is having the opportunity to express my creativity and discover new places—one of my goals in life is to try every restaurant in town. Fictional characters have motivated me to push myself outside of my comfort zone, such as studying vehicle technology, learning to swim, and picking up the guitar, which I’m currently learning. My values are about trying new things, being creative, and helping others. My advice is to keep embracing new experiences—you never know where they could lead you. I’m learning American Sign Language, baking, and doing art, and I plan to earn a degree at College of the Sequoias.
-Victoria
Victoria Lujano Castro

Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
"Victoria is a creative, kind, and goal driven young lady who has shown remarkable growth in her independence. She prepares to complete the Adult Transition Program (ATP) and earn her diploma this May. Alongside her studies at the Adult School, she attends College of the Sequoias and is working part time at Claire’s. One of her most impressive achievements is her commitment to learning American Sign Language. We are all cheering for Victoria as she continues to reach her goals after ATP!"
Instructor, Samantha Babb
English as a Second Language
I am studying English in the ESL program at Visalia Adult School. This is a great opportunity that VAS gives all students like me who immigrate to this country. I found out about this program through my daughter, Arely Saldana. She also studied here.
What I enjoy most about this is it gives me the opportunity to study at no cost and to learn English to understand and communicate with others, and to be able to get a better job.
Without a doubt, Teacher Judy has helped to shape an impact where I am today. She has patience in teaching and making us very confident in ourselves. All of us classmates, we all help each other with what we do not understand.
What I value most is respect for teachers, classmates and the school. Empathy, Equity and Solidarity with everyone. Responsibility in everything that has to be done in classes and assignments.
Don't hesitate or think too much. It is a great opportunity to learn. Both teachers and classmates are a union full of camaraderie. Have no fear, we are all here to learn.
Once I finish my study here, I would like to get a job or study Geriatrics to helps and care for the elderly, to make them feel calm and happy. For me, they are people who have a lot to teach. I like to talk with them about their knowledge acquired in their times when there was no technology.
-Leticia
Leticia Saldana

Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
"Leticia started VAS ESL class early this year. She was very shy and lacked confidence, but she had more skill than she gave herself credit for. Even though she was hesitant to remain in the intermediate class, she has done so and improved in all areas of English. She demonstrates her dedication to learning English by attending class nearly every day and doing extra work on our English online platform. Also, her confidence has grown, demonstrated by her willingness to assist other classmates. They are very comfortable asking her for help, which she very willingly, pleasantly, and confidently gives. She is still a bit shy, but nevertheless a great model student. It's a joy to know her and be her teacher."

Solomon See

Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
"Solomon is a great student who gives his all to being successful in this program, and he is a scholarship recipient from CCAE this spring 2025. His drive towards success is inspiring, and I am proud to watch him grow! I know he will make a great Nurse!"
Instructor, Heidi Matthews
CTE- Vocational Nursing Program
I am currently attending the Vocational Nursing Program. I came to find this program when I was looking for a fulfilling career path that allowed me to serve my community along with being able to dive into my interests in science.
My favorite things about the Vocational Nursing Program are the amazing instructors. They have a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for proper nursing education. With safety being a priority in our education, I know that future Vocational Nurse graduates of the VAS VN Program will be safe, well-educated, and compassionate nurses in the field. The instructors were very patient in making sure we understood the concepts, and I've learned so much from them. I'm truly grateful for the opportunities I've had here at Visalia Adult School.
The person who's impacted and shaped me the most in my life was my mom. She passed away a couple of years back, but she instilled in me the fire to help other people. She was an angel to me, and she led a life of selflessness. I strive to show the same compassion to others as she would. She demonstrated her faith in God by serving in church missionary trips in villages in Thailand, and I hope to serve others in my own way through healthcare. My values are constituted by compassion, empathy, integrity, humility, and a devotion to leaving this world a better place than we inherited it.
My recommendation for anyone considering enrolling in Visalia Adult School is just, "Take the first step." That first step is the hardest, but that first step leads to you walking down your career path. Even if you fall along the way, pick yourself back up and keep trying. We only ever truly fail if we decide that we're done trying.
I've always known I wanted a career in the healthcare field. I plan to further my education to become an ADN RN or BSN RN and eventually a DNP or CRNA. I would also enjoy being a nurse educator at some point. They say your specialty ends up choosing you, so we'll see where my journey takes me in the long run, but for now, we'll take it one step at a time! Let's pass this NCLEX December Cohort 2025!

Consuelo Shaw, High School Diploma
I am currently in the high school diploma program, a few years ago I found this program online and decided to attend. I enjoy learning, meeting other students, and enjoy all the wonderful teachers. The ones that have the greatest impact on shaping who I am today are my family, friends, and teachers. They have all encouraged me to do the best I can.
My first value is god! I was raised to have great family values and to respect others as well as myself.
For anyone who is thinking of attending Visalia Adult School, you should know that you will have a great opportunity to succeed in your goal. Whatever your goal may be, just know that you will have plenty of support from teachers and staff.
My goal after VAS is applying for the school district as a bus driver for special needs students. I am so excited for what the future holds for me.
Student, Consuelo Shaw
Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
"Chelo has been a student at VAS since 2016. She has worked in both the HSE and HSD programs over the years. Since returning to the HSD program in 2023, she has been on fire! She has worked non-stop, and made really good grades in the process. In addition to keeping her eye on the ball with her education, she is meaningfully involved in the quality of life for her family. Chelo is always cheerful in the classroom, and actively expresses support for her fellow students. I believe she will walk proudly at graduation this May, with her loving family in attendance. After graduation, she hopes to work for VUSD as a Bus Driver or "Cafeteria Lady"!"

March 2025
CTE- Vocational Nursing Program
I am in the Vocational Nursing program, and I first heard of Visalia Adult School a couple of years ago. I am the only one in my family that works in healthcare so I wasn’t truly aware of the many pathways there are to begin a nursing career. I didn’t know what to do next. Luckily, I worked with a few students that attended the school and were in the VN program. I began my move to Visalia and that’s where I ended up working at the clinical site for the Vocational Nursing program.
I enjoy the community the program brings. We, as students are experiencing this together and are working towards the same goal. I really love the class I’m in. No matter what we’re going through none of us want to leave anyone behind so we do our best to move forward in unity.
God and my parents are my biggest rock. They have always been the most consistent people in my life and my biggest supporters. I love them very deeply. They have both taught me to take ownership of my life, emphasized personal responsibility, resilience, and the belief that I have control over my life choices, even in the most difficult circumstances.
I value faith because it shapes how I approach forgiveness, relationships, and personal growth. I hold myself to high moral and ethical standards, especially in work and personal interactions. Nursing encouraged my beliefs in working hard, setting boundaries, and prioritizing my well-being while supporting others in meaningful ways.
My best advice is to minimize all the distractions in your life as much as you can. Preparing for your state test is important, but the test is only a few hours of your life; school is a long and demanding commitment. I hope to continue my education in nursing in Visalia! Ever since I’ve moved here doors have been opening and opportunities have been presenting themselves so I know I am on the right path.

Brandon Khutsi Yowlit McDarment

Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
"I would like to spotlight Brandon McDarment, a dedicated student in his 4th and final year of the Adult Transition Program (ATP), which focuses on independent living skills, job readiness, and college preparation. Passionate about his Native American culture and history, Brandon often shares insightful stories and cultural practices with his class, inspiring them to appreciate diverse histories. Throughout his time in ATP, Brandon has shown remarkable commitment and growth, and recently completed the required credits to earn his diploma. He will also represent ATP at the CCAE Legislative Action Day in Sacramento, a role that highlights his leadership and dedication. Brandon’s positive attitude, hard work, and cultural pride make him an inspiring role model for others."

Adult Transition Program
My name in Brandon McDarment, I am in the Adult Transition Program at the Visalia Adult School. I came to this program because I wanted to learn more and focus more on education. It is important to me and my future family.
I enjoy the life skills that Mrs. Babb has taught me. I want to thank everyone that has made an impact on my life. My Ma, my girlfriend, Jasmine and my Uncle Jessie have had an impact on shaping who I am today. I value respect, cultural acceptance because the number one key in life is to have kindness. But, I value kindness the most.
For anyone that is thinking of coming to Visalia Adult School, it is never to late to learn. You can learn from everyone and everything. My next steps are that I would like to attend Fresno State, I want to get a job and join the workforce. Most importantly, I want to continue my education and pursue higher education. I want to continue learning because I believe everyone at any age can continue learning. No matter where you come from, you can learn. You got this!
English as a Second Language
I came to find Visalia Adult School's ESL program by searching for classes online. I enjoy everything about this program. I love how the teachers teach to support us.
I want to learn to speak English. I want to be better. I believe that I have the greatest impact on shaping myself and improving my future self to become better everyday.
I value being a mother to my daughters. They are so important to me. For anyone that is thinking about coming to Visalia Adult School. Do it. But make sure you do not miss school, be on time.
I plan to keep learning and practicing speaking English & hopefully obtain better employment.
Ana Gaspar Bravo

Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
"Ana started ESL classes in October 2024 coming two days a week. She was very shy and not very confident, but she was determined to improve her English skills. She made a commitment to herself to come every day and to practice as much as possible on our online platform. In December, we changed the ESL schedule that now allows her to attend 5 days a week. She has been faithful to her commitment and, as a result, has improved her English skills dramatically. Now, she is often the one volunteering to read first or to share the answer first. She is taking risks knowing she is in a safe environment to do so. Being a single mother, she is dedicated to improving for her sake as well as her children's sakes. It's such a joy to see her growth not only in English. She has a most gracious demeanor and a delightful personality. I'm very excited for Ana and very glad that I get to be her teacher! "
-Instructor, Judy Moxley
Marco Garcia

English as a Second Language
I came to find Visalia Adult School through my friends. What I enjoy most about the ESL program here is the teacher's attitudes and their enthusiasm.
I believe that what will help me most is learning to work hard in learning English. It is beneficial for me to feel comfortable with speaking English.
I find value with my family and my job. This is why I want to be a confident speaker in English. For anyone else thinking about coming to take ESL classes here, you need to do your part and show up, have interest and push yourself to do better.
I plan to continue education, and I am looking forward to completing my high school diploma next.
Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
"Marco almost never misses a night of class. Not only is his attendance stellar, but he comes to class with positive energy that is contagious to the rest of the students. He is friendly and supportive of his peers and has made solid improvements in all four major components of English education: speaking, reading, listening, and writing. It's been a pleasure to have Marco as a student and I'm confident that his English skills will continue to improve."
-Instructor, Daniel Sheltzer
CTE- Vocational Nursing Program
I am in the LVN program here at VAS! It's an 18 month long program so a year and a half, and I'll be graduating in June of 2026. A typical week in my life consists of me going to school 5 days a week and 2 out of 5 of those days I'm at clinical. The rest of the days I'm in a lecture or skills lab. Lastly, I found this program through my aunt. She introduced it to me after applying to the school herself.
I genuinely love everything about this program. It's fun being able to learn and do what I've always wanted to do! I'm super grateful that I was one of the few that got selected. Clinicals are probably my favorite part of the program because I'm putting my skills and knowledge learned into practice. It's cool being able to make connections from the classroom to real life. I'm looking forward to next semester clinicals at the hospital.
My mom is the one who has shaped me into who I am today. My mom is the strongest person I know and is always giving. She helps me so much and without her I don't know what I would do. I've had quite a few obstacles thrown at me through this journey so it's been hard to sometimes stay motivated when I'm burnt out but she always keeps me in check and holds me accountable so I can finish what I started despite feeling challenged at times. She is my everything and I thank her so much for all her support and allowing/supporting me to do everything I want in this life.
Some values that I implement in my everyday life are kindness, compassion, grattitude and balance. I would just say if something interests you just try it. You never know until you apply or even try something out. I didn't think I would get into this program because of so many previous closed doors and obstacles, but I just decided to give it a try and that ended up being the time I got in. You are so much smarter and so much more capable than you know!!
I plan on continuing my education and getting my BSN as soon as I can. I have such a love for the cardiovascular system that I would love to gravitate towards units like the CVICU (cardiovascular intensive care unit) or the CVOR (cardiovascular operating room). Travel nursing is also something that sparks my interest because I would love to be able to travel and do what I love for a living. I cannot wait to achieve these goals that I have for myself.

Jordyn is a first-semester VN student, and she is shining brightly! She stays on top of her work, and the work she turns in is way above average. She has great attendance, shows up with a smile and is ready to participate! I cannot wait to watch her grow throughout this program!
