HiSET

HiSET Program

The HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) offers another widely accepted pathway for adults to earn a state-issued and nationally accepted high school equivalency credential. This program is ideal for individuals who did not complete traditional high school and are seeking to advance their career, pursue further education, or meet federal education requirements, including acceptance by all branches of the U.S. Military.

About the HiSET Test:

  • The HiSET exam assesses your knowledge and skills in core academic subjects, demonstrating your readiness for college and career.
  • It is a computer-based test, administered at Visalia Adult School.
  • The HiSET consists of five main subject areas:
    • Language Arts Reading
    • Language Arts Writing
    • Mathematics
    • Science
    • Social Studies

How Long Does It Take to Complete?

While official HiSET.org emphasizes preparation and offers resources (like practice tests, study guides, and links to adult education programs), it does not provide a specific statistic or average duration for how long it takes an individual to complete all HiSET tests if they haven't completed any yet. This could be the possibility because HiSET is a newer test series to the HSE program.

Official HiSET resources and related educational sites state that the time varies greatly depending on the a student's:

  • Current knowledge and skill level.
  • Time commitment to study.
  • Study methods (e.g., self-study vs. prep classes).
  • Number of subtests they need to pass.

Visalia Adult School's free HiSET preparation classes are designed to help you prepare efficiently and effectively, guiding you through the material and offering official practice tests.

Why Choose the HiSET?

The HiSET exam offers distinct advantages that may make it the ideal choice for your High School Equivalency journey. With its five separate subtests, the HiSET allows you to focus on specific subject areas (including distinct Reading and Writing sections), which some test-takers find beneficial for a more focused approach. Additionally, the HiSET is often recognized for its more traditional multiple-choice question format across most sections, which can be a preferred style for many learners. Ultimately, the HiSET provides a comprehensive and accessible path to earning your credential.
